Nayef Aguerd joins OM: ‘the best atmosphere in France and Europe’ at the Vélodrome

Olympique de Marseille has officially announced the arrival of Nayef Aguerd, Moroccan international defender, from West Ham for a transfer fee of around 23 million euros. At 28 years old, Aguerd has signed with OM until June 2030 and brings solid experience gained in Ligue 1, the Premier League, and La Liga, where he notably shone during West Ham’s 2023 Conference League victory. This signing strengthens a Marseille defense seeking stability for the upcoming season under coach Roberto De Zerbi.

In an enthusiastic first message on his social media, Nayef Aguerd expressed his eagerness to discover the Vélodrome stadium, describing it as a legendary place with « THE best atmosphere in France and Europe. » These flattering words demonstrate his motivation to quickly integrate and meet the expectations of the passionate OM supporters, who await leadership and consistency from him in defense.

Born in Kénitra and developed at the prestigious Mohammed VI Academy, Aguerd proved himself with Dijon and Rennes before his experience in England. His return to Ligue 1 is therefore a major asset for Marseille, which aims not only for national titles but also a strong run in the UEFA Champions League. His presence should improve defensive solidity and add aerial and strategic strength, especially on set pieces.

This transfer concluded a competition involving several European clubs, including Sunderland and AC Milan, who were also interested in the Moroccan defender. In addition to Aguerd, OM has strengthened its defensive line with other recruits, clearly showing its ambition for the 2025-2026 season. The arrival of this experienced player is part of a sporting policy aimed at combining international talent and local passion, symbolized by the iconic Vélodrome stadium and its unique crowd.
