Amine Gouiri scored the only goal as Marseille won 1-0 away to Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League on Thursday 5 November. The Algerian forward now has 7 goals this season in all competitions.
Olympique de Marseille claimed their first Europa League win of the season on Thursday 5 November, winning 1-0 away to Bayer Leverkusen. The scorer was Amine Gouiri, who netted the only goal of the game in the 77th minute, according to L’Équipe and La Provence.
The win ends a run of three defeats in as many matches in the competition, Made in Foot reports. With this goal, the Algerian forward now has 7 goals in all competitions, including a goal and an assist against Toulouse (2-0) the previous weekend.
A goal worth its weight in gold
In the 77th minute, Gouiri broke the deadlock. “It’s the goal that makes it 1-0, it did us good, we knew we’d have spaces, it’s our benchmark match in European competition. We held on until the end,” the forward told OneFootball, as relayed by Made in Foot.
Le Phocéen gave Gouiri a rating of 7.5/10, level with Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd as the best Marseille player. “The fans made a huge amount of noise, more noise than the people here, and I scored in front of them, so the story is perfect,” he added in L’Équipe.
Marseille’s attacking spearhead
With his 7th goal of the season, Gouiri confirms his rise. In Ligue 1, he sits 4th in the scoring charts with 6 goals, behind Lassine Sinayoko and his 8 goals, according to figures from Ligue1.com. In 55 matches in the Marseille shirt, he has 28 goals and 11 assists, according to La Provence.
Bruno Genesio, the Marseille coach, commented on the performance to Maxifoot: “It’s a continuation of his performances. It’s good, too, that he did it away from home, because he was mostly scoring at home. And, when you’re a centre-forward, scoring a goal largely down to talent is always interesting and shows that he’s moving forward, like the team, that he’s growing in confidence.”
With Algeria, the forward has 28 caps and 11 goals.
A schedule still to be confirmed
For Marseille, the next step will be hosting AJ Auxerre or a forthcoming Ligue 1 match, with the schedule still to be confirmed.
With the Fennecs, Gouiri and Algerian international midfielder Himad Abdelli, his Marseille teammate, have been called up by Brahim Hemdani for the double-header against Togo on 14 and 17 November, in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
