Pitso Mosimane has named Ronwen Williams and Teboho Mokoena, both of Mamelodi Sundowns, in his 27-man squad for the two matches against Kenya. He will wait until the last moment to decide whether to keep them, as both players feature in the CAF Super Cup on Sunday.
The squad is out. Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has included goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena in his 27-man group for the two meetings with Kenya, SAFA has announced. The former is working his way back from injury, though neither the nature nor the length of that injury has been specified.
But the uncertainty does not end with the medical bulletin. Both men play for Mamelodi Sundowns, who face USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup on Sunday 8 November at Loftus Versfeld (15:00). Mosimane has warned that he will wait until the last moment to decide whether to keep them or not, TimesLIVE reports.
A door left open
The coach justifies his choice by the weight the two players carry in Bafana’s recent run. “Those are key players who led us in the first AFCON (in 2023), the second AFCON (in 2025) and at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They are very, very important players and we will wait till the last possible moment should the doctors say to me ‘coach, we are ruling them out,’” he said, according to SAFA.
Mosimane also recalled the two players’ shared journey: they took part in the 2023 and 2025 AFCONs, the 2026 World Cup as well as the September qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea. “Well, those are key players for us, who have been leading us to the first Afcon, the second Afcon and the Fifa World Cup,” he added in front of the press, according to TimesLIVE.
Nothing suggests at this stage that Williams or Mokoena will play in either of the two matches against Kenya. The head coach is deferring to the doctors, and his decision will depend on what they tell him.
Sundowns, the main supplier
The squad confirms the club’s central place in the national set-up: Mamelodi Sundowns provide 12 of the 27 players selected, according to SuperSport.
The group also sees the return of Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who was absent from Mosimane’s first gathering, according to SuperSport. Williams, 34, has for his part been nominated among the ten best goalkeepers in Africa for the African trophy, according to FootAfrica.
Kenya in a double header
South Africa host Kenya on 13 November at the Orlando Amstel Arena in Johannesburg (18:00), before the return match in Nairobi on 17 November, according to SAFA.
In the meantime, Williams and Mokoena will wear the Sundowns shirt against USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup, on Sunday 8 November at 15:00 at Loftus Versfeld.
