Gold Fields Ghana has pledged $500,000 to the Black Challenge, the national amputee football team, ahead of the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, according to Kickoff Ghana. The commitment covers two years and forms part of a $5 million sponsorship agreement with the GFA.
With the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup approaching, the Black Challenge is receiving financial support. According to Kickoff Ghana, Gold Fields Ghana has pledged $500,000 to the Ghana national team before the competition, scheduled for 13 to 22 November in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico.
Representatives of the company met the team at the Mandiata Hotel in Accra, in the presence of Kurt Okraku, president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and Samson Deen, president of the National Paralympic Committee. The commitment, which runs over two years, forms part of the $5 million sponsorship agreement signed with the GFA and unveiled on 8 May 2026.
Financial support over two years
The pledge covers two years, according to Kickoff Ghana. The report does not specify the payment arrangements: nothing indicates whether the funds have already actually been paid to the Black Challenge.
Elliot Twum, vice-president and managing director of Gold Fields Ghana, explained the move: “This is your opportunity to hold high the flag of Ghana because you’ve achieved a lot. We want to continue to support football and to continue to be associated with the Black Challenge.” The remarks, reported by Kickoff Ghana, reflect the company’s desire to maintain its association with the national side.
Group D in their sights
On the sporting side, the Black Challenge have been placed in Group D of the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup, alongside Angola, Colombia and Iraq. The competition will be held in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico, from 13 to 22 November, according to Kickoff Ghana.
Kurt Okraku sent a message of encouragement to the players: “Be rest assured that Ghana is with you. It is now your time to go and make us proud.” The GFA president was speaking at the meeting with the Gold Fields Ghana representatives, again according to Kickoff Ghana.
Long-awaited recognition
On the Paralympic movement side, Samson Deen welcomed the initiative. “This is what we’ve been looking for over many years. I want to say that we are grateful for what the GFA and Gold Fields have done.”, said the president of the National Paralympic Committee, quoted by Kickoff Ghana.
The report does not give a detailed schedule of Ghana’s matches, only the dates of the competition.
