More than a year after their 10th WAFCON title, the National Sports Commission confirms the payment of the bonus promised to the Super Falcons by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade had spoken out about the players’ wait.
The National Sports Commission has confirmed the payment of the presidential bonus promised to the Super Falcons after their 10th WAFCON title, according to The Journal Nigeria. Each of the 24 players received the naira equivalent of $100,000, and each of the 11 members of the technical and administrative staff $50,000.
The promise dates back to 28 July 2025, at a reception at the State House in Abuja, where Bola Tinubu had announced it. Players and staff had also received the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) honour and three-bedroom apartments in the Renewed Hope estate. In the meantime, captain Rasheedat Ajibade had publicly criticised the players’ wait.
Echegini’s 88th-minute goal
The 10th continental title had been won on 26 July 2025 in Rabat, against Morocco. Nigeria had come from behind to beat Morocco 3-2, thanks to a winning goal from Jennifer Echegini in the 88th minute.
That triumph, pursued under the slogan “Mission X”, is the fourth in five editions of the competition.
Naira bonuses and $1 million from CAF
At a rate of about 1,450 nairas to the dollar, each $100,000 bonus is worth around 145 million nairas. The total therefore exceeds 4 billion nairas, according to The Journal Nigeria.
The campaign had also brought in $1 million in prize money paid by CAF, a record amount. The Falcons’ outstanding match bonuses have also been settled.
Among the players concerned by the bonus are Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Michelle Alozie and Esther Okoronkwo.
A reaction from the NSC
The payment comes after captain Rasheedat Ajibade spoke out, criticising the players’ wait in the months following the reception at the State House.
The chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, reacted: “The Super Falcons made Nigeria proud, and Mr. President has honored his commitment to them in full. This means a great deal to the team and to Nigerian sports”.
