Without a club since terminating his contract with Espérance de Tunis in September 2026, South Africa international winger Elias Mokwana is reportedly in talks with Kaizer Chiefs, according to Soccer Laduma and m.dongqiudi.com.
Elias Mokwana could be heading back to the South African league. According to Soccer Laduma, relayed by dailysports.net, Kaizer Chiefs are among the leading contenders to sign the 27-year-old international winger, who has been a free agent since leaving Espérance de Tunis in September 2026. His representatives have reportedly already offered his services to the Soweto club, which is assessing the financial and sporting terms of the deal.
The information remains a rumour, and no agreement can be presented as signed at this stage. According to m.dongqiudi.com, however, negotiations are ongoing and a deal could be reached in the coming days. The move would involve no transfer fee, the same source states.
An early termination in Tunis
The split with Espérance de Tunis dates back to September 2026. Mokwana was under contract until June 2027, but an early termination was agreed, according to m.dongqiudi.com. The outlet reports that the winger was deemed surplus to requirements by the Tunisian club’s coach, Laurențiu Reghecampf.
Having arrived in Tunis in July 2024 after catching the eye with Sekhukhune United, the player spent last season on loan at Al-Hazem in Saudi Arabia, where he scored 4 goals.
His name had already been linked with Wydad Casablanca, but that transfer did not materialise, dailysports.net recalls. Now he is back on the market, without a contract and therefore available for free.
Soweto seeking fresh blood
Kaizer Chiefs are looking for attacking reinforcements with immediate impact and at low cost, according to m.dongqiudi.com. Mokwana’s profile, a Bafana Bafana international capable of playing on the wing, would fit that dual requirement: he is a free agent and knows South African football from his time at Sekhukhune United.
The deal has also received backing from Itumeleng Khune, the former Chiefs captain, who encouraged the signing and compared Mokwana’s style to that of former star Jabu Mahlangu, dailysports.net reports. That is a personal opinion, not a guarantee of performance.
An agreement in the coming days?
According to m.dongqiudi.com, negotiations between Chiefs and Mokwana’s representatives are ongoing, with the possibility of an agreement in the coming days. Caution is still warranted: the Soweto club is reportedly still assessing the financial and sporting terms of the move, according to dailysports.net.
For the 27-year-old winger, a return to South Africa would be a chance to relaunch his career after his spell in Tunisia. Chiefs, for their part, could land an attacking reinforcement without a fee, provided the deal goes through.
At this stage, the financial and sporting terms are still being assessed by Chiefs, and no agreement has yet been reached.
