CAF: Samson Adamu officially confirmed as secretary general!

The CAF Executive Committee confirmed Nigerian Samson Adamu as secretary general, the body announced on 1 November 2026. He had held the role on an interim basis since 29 March 2026, following the departure of Swiss-Congolese Véron Mosengo-Omba, the organisation’s former secretary general.

African football’s governing body is ending a transitional period. According to Le360 Sport, the Executive Committee confirmed Samson Adamu this week, ahead of the official announcement on 1 November 2026. The Nigerian, interim holder since 29 March 2026, now holds the post permanently.

Véron Mosengo-Omba’s departure opened this transitional period, which Adamu’s confirmation now brings to a close.

An exhaustive recruitment process

CAF did not simply extend a provisional arrangement. According to Le360 Sport, Adamu’s confirmation stems from an “exhaustive recruitment process, during which the position was widely advertised and several candidates were interviewed”.

The post was therefore widely advertised before the decision, and several candidates were interviewed.

A career within the administration

Adamu knows CAF’s administration from the inside. Appointed CAF director of competitions in 2018, he subsequently served as director of tournaments and events. In that capacity, he played a leading role in organising several major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Nigerian also holds a FIFA master’s degree, according to the same source.

The shadow of Mosengo-Omba

Adamu’s confirmation closes a sensitive file. Mosengo-Omba had been suspected of breaching internal regulations, notably after it emerged that he had remained in post beyond the retirement age limit of 63. He was 66 at the time, according to Le360 Sport.

The available information does not establish whether these suspicions led to any sanction or disciplinary decision against him. Adamu was appointed interim secretary general in March 2026 in place of Mosengo-Omba, and his confirmation comes more than seven months after his interim began.
