Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa beat Edo Queens 3-2 in Cairo to qualify for the Women’s Champions League, thanks to a goal from Afishata Mohammed in the 92nd minute of extra time. The Nigerians have lodged a complaint with CAF.
It took until the 92nd minute of extra time, in Cairo, for the fate of the WAFU B zone qualifying final to swing. According to Ghana Soccer Net, Ampem Darkoa snatched their ticket to the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League at the expense of Nigeria’s Edo Queens. Ampem Darkoa Ladies player Afishata Mohammed scored the decisive goal, according to Afroballers.
But the win does not close the case. Edo Queens have lodged a new complaint with CAF to have the session played in Cairo annulled, citing issues over the venue, the organisation and player eligibility, according to Afroballers. CAF has not yet responded to the request.
A final full of twists
The saga began on 5 September in Ouagadougou, where the first leg ended 2-2. Edo Queens were then crowned regional champions after a 4-1 win on penalties. CAF’s organising committee set that result aside: it ruled that the penalty shootout had no sporting effect and ordered the match to resume from the start of extra time.
That decision was confirmed by CAF’s appeal board on 16 October. The resumption therefore took place in Cairo on 29 October, and it was Afishata Mohammed who tipped the balance in the final minutes of extra time.
Edo Queens refuse to give up
The Nigerian side do not intend to leave it there. Their new complaint aims to have the Cairo session annulled, raising questions over the venue, the organisation and player eligibility. None of these challenges has yet been ruled on by CAF.
Ampem Darkoa await CAF’s decision
The Ghanaian club, qualified on the pitch, must now deal with this complaint. It concerns three specific points, the venue, the organisation and player eligibility, which the continental body will have to examine before confirming the qualification.
CAF’s response will therefore determine whether the place secured in Cairo is definitively theirs. The 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League remains the upcoming target for both clubs.
