Algeria: Ibrahim Maza targets AFCON and responds to Wirtz comparisons!

In an interview with the Bundesliga’s official website, Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Ibrahim Maza sets out his ambition to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Algeria and responds to comparisons with Florian Wirtz.

Ibrahim Maza does not want to be reduced to an heir. In an exclusive interview with the Bundesliga’s official website, relayed by Competition.dz, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder outlined his ambitions: to shine with Algeria and write his own story at Bayer Leverkusen, far from the shadow of Florian Wirtz.

Born in Berlin to an Algerian father, the player is going through a fine spell. With 2 goals and 2 assists in his first 6 Bundesliga matches this season, he also delivered a standout assist for Patrik Schick against Freiburg (2-1), a moment that fuelled comparisons with the club’s former star.

An embraced legacy, a path to forge

Praise has poured on the young Algerian since the start of his season. But the man himself keeps a cool head. “Flo is an exceptional player and a true Bayer Leverkusen legend. I want to forge my own path and become a player in my own right,” he said, according to Competition.dz.

Maza does not, however, disown the legacy left by Wirtz. “Our styles are slightly different, but it’s a pleasure to follow in the footsteps of a player of his calibre. I hope to reach his level one day,” he added. A way of acknowledging the mark left by Wirtz while asserting his own identity.

Algeria, a source of pride and a goal

Maza chose the green shirt and reaffirms his absolute pride in that decision. “Playing for my country and representing my father’s origins means a great deal to me. It is a huge honour to represent Algeria,” he told the Bundesliga, according to Competition.dz.

The Leverkusen player has set his course: “We have great ambitions and I really want to win the AFCON. I also want to qualify for the next World Cup.”

Maza has not forgotten where his passion came from either. He made a point of highlighting the central role of his father, who used to train him personally after his childhood matches.

A club future still open

His performances (6 direct goal involvements, 3 goals and 3 assists in 8 appearances in all competitions, according to Goal.com) are fuelling speculation about his future. Asked on Saturday about interest from Paris Saint-Germain and a potential €50m offer following Kvaratskhelia’s injury, PSG head coach Luis Enrique remained very measured in his press conference, according to La Gazette du Fennec.

“We always have this responsibility to be attentive to opportunities during the transfer window. But not to make up for an injury,” he said, without confirming any concrete interest in the player. No lead is confirmed at this stage.

Bayer Leverkusen, fourth in the Bundesliga, play matchday 8 on Sunday 25 October against Hoffenheim. The Algeria national team are due to meet again in November 2026.
