Al Ahli Tripoli: Mayele gets the Libyan machine going again and seals group-stage spot

Trailing 1-0 to Welwalo Adigrat, Al Ahli Tripoli won 4-1 in Tripoli, thanks in particular to an equaliser from DR Congo international Fiston Mayele in the 51st minute, and qualify with an 8-1 aggregate.

Al Ahli Tripoli have qualified for the group stage of the Confederation Cup. The Libyan club beat Ethiopia’s Welwalo Adigrat 4-1 in the second leg of the second preliminary round, played in Tripoli, according to Africa Top Sports. The win takes the aggregate to 8-1, after the 4-0 first-leg victory reported by Sport News Africa.

The evening could yet have taken an unexpected turn: Welwalo Adigrat had opened the scoring in the first half, springing a surprise on the Libyans who had won 4-0 in the first leg. A response was needed, and it was Fiston Mayele who set it in motion.

Mayele gets his side back on track

The DR Congo international, a striker for the Leopards, equalised in the 51st minute, putting his club back on track, reports Ahraminfo. According to Africa Top Sports, the goal confirms Mayele’s status as a major attacking weapon on the continental stage for the Libyan club.

From there it was all Tripoli. Ezzeddine Al Mariami scored the second Libyan goal in the 76th minute, before Omran Al Tawerghi sealed the win two minutes later, in the 78th. The sources consulted do not attribute the fourth Libyan goal.

An 8-1 aggregate without a scare

Sport News Africa reports that Al Ahli Tripoli secured their qualification for the CAF Cup group stage without a scare. The 8-1 aggregate, built on the 4-0 first-leg win and this 4-1 second-leg victory, illustrates the gap between the two teams over the two legs.

The goal conceded in the first half ultimately changed nothing about the outcome of the tie. The response from Mayele and his team-mates was enough to put the Libyan club back on the road to the group stage.

Welwalo, a historic first campaign

For Welwalo Adigrat, the adventure ends at the second round. The Ethiopian club nevertheless leave the competition with a reason to be proud: they were playing their first African campaign, described as historic by Africa Top Sports, and they marked it with a goal in Tripoli.

Al Ahli Tripoli, for their part, march on. The draw for the Confederation Cup group stage is scheduled for 28 October 2026, where the Libyans will learn their future opponents.
