The CAF Executive Committee, meeting on 22 October under the chairmanship of Patrice Motsepe, discussed the continental calendar by videoconference. The resolutions were not yet known by the evening.
The Executive Committee (ExCo) of the Confederation of African Football met this Thursday, 22 October 2026 at 17:00 Cairo time, 14:00 GMT, by videoconference. The session was chaired by Dr Patrice Motsepe, president of the body, according to CAF Online and Foot Afrique.
On the agenda: preparations for the CAF Ordinary General Assembly (OGA), scheduled for 21 November 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria, and a strategic progress report to be presented by Samson Adamu, interim general secretary and director of competitions, on the organisation of the upcoming events. The competitions calendar files were also on the table, though no decisions were known at the end of the meeting.
The AFCON cycle in question
The much-debated return of the Africa Cup of Nations to a biennial rhythm, after an attempt to move to a four-year cycle, was on the agenda, according to Foot Afrique.
If this return to the two-year cycle were approved, the next edition of AFCON would be held in 2029 instead of 2028, the same source specifies. The awarding of the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions, as well as the broadcast and commercial rights negotiations, are among the hot topics of the moment, with their outcome not yet known at this stage.
In the meantime, the continental calendar has AFCON 2027 in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, from 1 June to 18 July 2027.
Sundowns v USM Alger on 8 November
Among the confirmed dates is the African Super Cup final, which will pit Mamelodi Sundowns against USM Alger on 8 November 2026 in Johannesburg, South Africa, according to Foot Afrique.
The rest of the agenda also includes the final phase of the CAF Women’s Champions League, scheduled from 1 to 15 December 2026, the CAF Awards 2026 ceremony, set for 7 December in Lagos, Nigeria, according to L’Opinion, and the Beach Soccer AFCON, confirmed in Senegal, in Saly, from 28 November to 6 December 2026.
The next steps in the process
The resolutions adopted by the ExCo are to be communicated officially on the evening of 22 October 2026. It is from that statement that we will know whether the return to the biennial AFCON cycle, like the awarding of future editions, has cleared another hurdle.
The next institutional date remains the Ordinary General Assembly in Abuja, on 21 November.
