Malian centre-back Souleymane Doumbia, 18, has joined SC Bastia on a one-year loan with an option to buy. Zoumana Sow, executive director of the Djikiya FC academy, details the background to the move.
Souleymane Doumbia, an 18-year-old Malian youth international centre-back, has officially signed for SC Bastia, according to AfricaFoot. The news dates from 21 October 2026. The deal takes the form of a one-year loan with an option to buy for a further season with the Corsican club.
Before arriving in Corsica, the young Malian had tried his luck elsewhere. Zoumana Sow, a former Mali international and executive director of the Djikiya FC academy, detailed the process to AfricaFoot. His account tells of successful trials and collapsed negotiations, before Bastia found the formula.
Derby Académie make a counter-offer that is accepted
According to Zoumana Sow, the Bastia signing is the result of a deliberate choice. “You could say it is first and foremost a well-considered choice, because several clubs were interested,” he told AfricaFoot, adding that he had followed the discussions from the inside: “I was on the inside as far as the negotiations were concerned.”
The official describes a two-stage negotiation: a proposal from SC Bastia, then a counter-proposal from Derby Académie, the club Doumbia comes from, accepted by Bastia. “Derby Académie in turn made a counter-proposal that was accepted by SC Bastia. We worked on that,” he sums up.
Le Havre, Nantes and Saint-Étienne miss out
Before Bastia, however, the centre-back had convinced elsewhere. According to Zoumana Sow, Le Havre AC and FC Nantes saw him complete successful trials. “There was Le Havre, where he had even validated his trial, but it fell through a bit over the transfer fee. There was Nantes too. He had validated there as well,” he recounts.
AS Saint-Étienne were also in the running, according to the same source, before the deal collapsed at the last minute: “Saint-Étienne bought a Senegalese player, so the deal eventually fell through.” These explanations for the Le Havre, Nantes and Saint-Étienne failures are Zoumana Sow’s own; they are not presented as versions confirmed by the clubs concerned.
AfricaFoot also mentions interest from Premier League, Slovak and Hungarian sides in the Malian’s profile. Those leads remain to be confirmed, for lack of official validation.
Bastia, a playground for a young player
The choice of the Corsican club follows a logic of playing time and structure. According to AfricaFoot, SC Bastia was seen as the ideal option, offering playing time and a favourable environment for developing young players in Ligue 2.
Doumbia has joined the Bastia squad to prepare for the upcoming Ligue 2 fixtures. He is expected to be integrated into the squad for the matches at the end of October 2026.
