Enugu Rangers: complaint filed against MC Alger after Abeokuta vandalism!

Enugu Rangers have lodged a complaint with the CAF Disciplinary Committee against MC Alger following the incidents in the first leg, which the Nigerian club won 2-0 on Sunday in Abeokuta.

The move is official. Enugu Rangers have formally submitted a complaint file against MC Alger to the CAF Disciplinary Committee, following the incidents that occurred during the first leg of the second preliminary round of the Champions League, according to Foot-Africa.com.

On the pitch, the Nigerian side won 2-0 on Sunday at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. Left-back Kenneth Igboke, from the penalty spot (87th minute), then James Emo (90th minute), scored the winning goals in the closing minutes. The match had already been marked by two red cards: Nigerian goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh, as early as the 13th minute for a serious foul on MC Alger striker Zakaria Naidji, then Algerian forward Oussama Benhaoua, in the 51st minute, which brought both teams down to ten against ten.

Allegations of vandalism and violence

In their official complaint, the Enugu Rangers management denounce the deliberate destruction of the access gates, violent ticketless intrusion and the mass vandalism of seats in the away stand by MCA supporters, according to Punch Nigeria. The club writes in particular: “We have officially referred the matter to CAF over the destruction of the stadium entrance gate, forced entry without payment, the deliberate vandalism of seats and the repeated acts of violence from the opposing stand.”

The club are calling for disciplinary sanctions under Articles 82 and 83 of the CAF code, as well as guarantees of enhanced security for the trip to Algiers. They also ask the continental body to consider the possibility of imposing a full behind-closed-doors match on MC Alger for the return leg, according to Afrik-Foot.

Mouloudia with their backs to the wall before the return leg

Recent form does not favour MC Alger. This defeat in Nigeria took the Mouloudia’s run to 11 consecutive matches without an away win in CAF interclub competitions, according to Tribal Football. A figure that weighs on a club now obliged to overturn a two-goal deficit at home.

The Nigerian delegation landed in Algiers on Wednesday morning under escort, reports DailySports. Head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu and Enugu Rangers will therefore go into the return leg with a two-goal cushion.

A return leg under scrutiny

The return leg is scheduled for Friday 23 October 2026 at 20:00 at the Ali-Ammar Stadium (Ali-la-Pointe) in Douéra. The CAF Disciplinary Committee’s verdict, which is awaited, will concern possible financial sanctions or a behind-closed-doors match.
