Ghana: Dwight Yorke a candidate to succeed Queiroz, “I am a manager”

  • EN, Ghana

From Dubai, Dwight Yorke has publicly put himself forward for the Ghana head coach job, vacant since the departure of Carlos Queiroz, the former head coach, on 1 October 2026. The former Manchester United player is staking his claim on his managerial experience.

Dwight Yorke rejects the former-player label. On Tuesday 20 October, from his home in Dubai, the former Trinidad and Tobago captain publicly put himself forward for the Ghana head coach job, The Guardian reports. His intervention comes as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) actively searches for the Portuguese coach’s successor.

Carlos Queiroz left his post on 1 October 2026, leaving the Black Stars without a head coach. Yorke’s name is on the GFA’s shortlist, alongside renowned African coaches, according to the British daily. Yorke, for his part, prefers to highlight his track record.

“I am not a kid”

Yorke refuses to be reduced to his status as a former player. “I am not a kid trying to get into management for the first time. I have done it and I want that message to come across clearly,” he told The Guardian. And he concluded, in three words: “I am a manager.”

He points to four years of experience in the dugout. His first outing dates back to May 2022, when he coached the A-League All Stars against FC Barcelona, in front of more than 70,000 spectators in Sydney. A match lost 2-3.

A trophy with Macarthur

Appointed in July 2022 at the helm of Australian club Macarthur FC, Yorke led his side, three months after his arrival in Sydney, to victory in the Australia Cup, clinching the first major trophy in the club’s history. “We went into a relatively unknown A-League team and managed to win the cup,” he recalled to The Guardian.

His spell ended in January 2023, with Macarthur sitting 6th in the table. Alongside these managerial credentials is his playing past: between 1999 and 2001, in the Manchester United shirt, Yorke won three Premier League titles and a historic treble.

The GFA faced with its choice

Yorke’s candidacy is part of a process the Ghanaian federation is pursuing with several options. According to the Ghanaian press, cited by The Guardian, Senegalese coaches Pape Thiaw and Aliou Cissé, as well as former Morocco head coach Walid Regragui, are also being considered by the GFA. African profiles aplenty that Yorke will have to outshine.

The man in question states his ambition plainly: he wants to take charge of a major African football nation. The GFA’s final decision is expected in the coming days, with no firm date announced at this stage.
