Olympique de Marseille win 5-2 at Angers with a goal from Amine Gouiri, who tops the Ligue 1 scoring charts, and an equaliser from Himad Abdelli, who does not celebrate out of respect for his former club.
Olympique de Marseille beat SCO Angers 5-2 at the Stade Raymond-Kopa on matchday 7 of Ligue 1. In this emphatic win, the two Algeria internationals Himad Abdelli and Amine Gouiri were the main attacking protagonists, according to Competition.dz.
Along with those two players, Nouhoum Kamissoko (45th), Amine Harit (83rd) and Igor Paixão scored Marseille’s other goals. Gouiri ended a month-long drought, while Abdelli scored against his former club, for whom he played 119 matches.
Abdelli equalises and holds back
Handed a start in midfield by coach Bruno Genesio, who left Angel Gomes on the bench, Himad Abdelli equalised in the 38th minute with a diving header from a Timothy Weah cross, according to FootMarseille.
But he did not celebrate his goal. Out of respect for SCO Angers, the club he played 119 matches for, scoring 20 goals along the way, and where he was captain, he refused to do so, Competition.dz reports.
Gouiri tops the scoring charts
Amine Gouiri, a forward, won a penalty in the 60th minute and then converted it at the second attempt after a save by the Angers goalkeeper. That goal ends a month-long drought for the 26-year-old with Marseille, according to the same source.
He now has 5 goals in 9 appearances in all competitions this season, according to FootMarseille. With his 5 league goals, the Algeria international tops the Ligue 1 scoring charts, level with Tengstedt and Lepaul, Competition.dz reports.
“This attacking performance is a continuation of the work we have been doing with the coach for several weeks,” Gouiri told Africa Top Sports.
Lorient at the Vélodrome next
The win is Marseille’s second in a row in Ligue 1, after the 2-0 victory over Troyes. Thanks to this performance, the Marseille side climb to 8th place in the league, according to Football Écologie France.
The next chapter comes as early as the weekend of 25 October, with FC Lorient visiting the Stade Vélodrome on matchday 8.
