CAF: AFCON back to a two-year cycle, Motsepe under maximum pressure!

Ten months after voting for an AFCON every four years, the CAF has announced its return to a biennial rhythm. A U-turn that puts its president Patrice Motsepe under pressure, according to The Guardian.

The CAF has announced the return of the AFCON every two years. Yet the body had voted, only ten months ago, to move the competition to a four-year cycle, reports The Guardian.

This change of course places Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, in a delicate position. According to the British daily, the CAF boss is facing an internal crisis of confidence and a revolt within his institution.

The succession already in play

Several contenders are already positioning themselves. Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), is among those manoeuvring to obtain the approval of Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, with a view to a possible early succession at the head of the CAF, still according to The Guardian.

Official validation of the AFCON’s return to a biennial rhythm is expected at the CAF Executive Committee, next month in Abidjan, in November 2026.
