Ghana: Berekum Chelsea team bus attacked, player killed

  • EN, Ghana

In Ghana, tragedy has struck the football community after the team bus of Berekum Chelsea was attacked by armed assailants, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old player.

On Sunday, April 12, 2026, the team was returning from Sunyani following a 1-0 defeat to FC Samartex in the Ghana Premier League. While traveling along the Goaso-Bibiani road, the bus was ambushed by a group of around six masked men armed with pistols and assault rifles.

The attackers blocked the road and opened fire on the vehicle. As the driver attempted to reverse and escape, players and staff fled the bus, scattering into nearby bushes to avoid the gunfire. Amid the chaos, 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong was shot in the head.

He was rushed to Bibiani Hospital by his teammates but sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

On loan from Aduana FC since January 2026, Frimpong had made 13 appearances and scored two goals this season for Berekum Chelsea. A promising young talent, his life was tragically cut short in shocking circumstances.

This incident has plunged Ghanaian football into mourning and once again raises serious concerns about the safety of club travel in certain regions. The Ghana Football Association, along with the wider international football community, has expressed its condolences to Frimpong’s family, teammates, and club staff, all deeply affected by this tragic event.
