From August 2 to 30, 2025, the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 will take place in a pioneering East African triple-host format, with Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania co-hosting the event. This 8th edition brings together 19 national teams, exclusively composed of players competing in their domestic leagues, spotlighting local talents on the continental stage.

A dynamic and strategic three-nation tournament
CHAN 2024 will be held across three host countries, starting with an opening match in Dar es Salaam where Tanzania faces Burkina Faso. Kenya and Uganda will host matches in the initial days, reflecting a regional approach that integrates the wider East African community into a continental football celebration[1][3].

Groups and competitive landscape
The 19 teams are divided into four groups: Group A features Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia; Group B has Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and Central African Republic; Group C includes Uganda, Niger, Guinea, plus two qualifiers; and Group D contains defending champions Senegal, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan, and Nigeria. This mix promises intense competition between football powerhouses and emerging teams.

Team performances and ambitions
Some teams have strong pedigrees, while others are on the rise. Niger, participating for the 5th time, aims to surpass its best 4th-place finish from 2022. Head coach Harouna Doula Gabde’s tactical adaptability targets unprecedented success[4]. Guinea, third place in 2020, seeks to maintain momentum despite the absence of coach Souleymane Camara, who has nonetheless prepared the squad thoroughly[4]. The tournament serves as a crucial platform for showcasing homegrown African football talent.

A milestone for African football development
Sponsored by TotalEnergies, CHAN specifically aims to promote local football and provide visibility to players competing domestically. Beyond prestige, the tournament fosters player development and discovery, enhancing Africa’s football landscape. The climax will be a thrilling final at Nairobi’s Moi International Sport Centre on August 30, 2025, promising an unforgettable experience for all football enthusiasts.
