A recent breakout talent at Stade Rennais, Mahamadou Nagida is rapidly stepping up to a new level. The 20-year-old left-back, born on June 28, 2005, in Douala, Cameroon (1.76m, 74kg, left-footed), joined Rennes in 2023 from the Cameroonian league. He caught the public’s attention during his first start against Paris Saint-Germain, delivering a standout performance in Rennes’ 3–1 victory. Since then, under head coach Franck Haise, he has earned more starts and emerged as one of Ligue 1’s biggest surprises in recent weeks, recording 20 appearances, 6 starts, 2 goals, and 680 minutes played.
A Swiss club makes its move
His performances have not gone unnoticed abroad. According to Média Foot, FC Basel are closely monitoring the defender and could make a move in the upcoming summer transfer window. Currently third in their league and competing for the playoffs, the Swiss club are looking to strengthen their squad with promising young talents like Nagida, who has scored 3 goals this season in Ligue 1, including against Saint-Étienne and Monaco. His impressive debut against PSG, where he played out of position with intensity and aggression, was widely praised on social media.
Under contract with Rennes until 2029, Nagida remains a valuable asset for the Breton club, who still control his future. His 2024/25 season stats speak volumes: 15 official matches, 586 minutes played, 2 goals, and an average of 0.31 goals per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. Despite receiving a yellow card, his progression has been steady, with an average rating of 5.3 across his 13 professional appearances.
With growing interest surrounding this Cameroonian prospect, Rennes could soon face a real test on the transfer market. FC Basel are not the only club tracking the player, whose rapid rise (29 matches, 2 goals over three years) is attracting attention across Europe. It remains to be seen whether a concrete offer will be made to lure the promising full-back away from Roazhon Park.
