Saudi League: African stars set for a crucial 2026 transfer window

Since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival in 2023, the Saudi Pro League has experienced a spectacular rise. No longer seen as just a financial destination, the championship is now attracting global attention as a competitive football hub. African stars have been at the heart of this transformation, with many of their contracts set to expire in June 2026.

Leading the way is Yassine Bounou, the Moroccan goalkeeper of Al-Hilal. A standout performer at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where he helped his side beat Manchester City, Bounou is close to signing a two-year extension. His new deal would confirm his indispensable role as a cornerstone of Al-Hilal’s success since arriving in 2023.

At Al-Nassr, however, Sadio Mane faces a more complicated scenario. After three years alongside Ronaldo, the Senegalese forward is still searching for a major title. At 33, Mane could consider leaving for one final European adventure or a new challenge if his side once again fails to secure AFC Champions League qualification this season.

Meanwhile, Franck Kessie has settled firmly at Al-Ahli after winning both the AFC Champions League and the Saudi Super Cup. His Ivorian compatriot Kalidou Koulibaly remains a defensive anchor at Al-Hilal, though growing interest from clubs like Marseille could tempt a European return. Others, such as Edouard Mendy, Karl Toko Ekambi, and Musa Barrow, are navigating short-term contracts and uncertain futures, with adaptation still a challenge for some.

As the 2026 transfer window approaches, the fate of these African players will be pivotal for the Saudi Pro League. Their trajectories not only highlight the ambition of Saudi clubs but also signal the league’s growing importance on both the Asian and global football stage.
