Young Natnael Abraha, of Ethiopian origin, played his first Bundesliga match for TSG Hoffenheim in the 0-2 defeat at Werder Bremen. Coach Christian Ilzer praised his debut.
Natnael Abraha, 18, has taken his first steps in the Bundesliga. On Saturday, in TSG Hoffenheim’s 0-2 defeat on the pitch of Werder Bremen, the young player was handed his first start in the German top flight, according to Kicker.
Born in Frankfurt, like Niklas Süle, he has Ethiopian origins. This first start comes amid an injury crisis that forced Christian Ilzer to reshuffle his defence.
A start thrown together in an emergency
To face Werder Bremen, Christian Ilzer had to do without Valentin Grundreiss, who suffered a tibia fracture, and Vladimir Coufal, affected by a muscle problem. Those absences opened the door to the starting eleven for Natnael Abraha, who thus made his first Bundesliga start.
Despite the defeat, the coach reacted in these terms: “I am proud of my team and of the way Natnael Abraha made his debut. In such a full stadium, I have to say one thing: respect. These are things we can draw strength from,” he said, as quoted by Kicker.
Kicker gave Abraha’s performance on his debut a rating of 3.
A promising trajectory
Having arrived in summer 2025 from the Eintracht Frankfurt academy, Natnael Abraha won the German U19 championship with the club in his first year.
Before this Bundesliga first, the youngster had already had a taste of the senior squad. He had played one DFB-Pokal match and had been named in the squad twice. This time, he was handed a start in the league.
What next for Abraha?
With the injuries to Valentin Grundreiss and Vladimir Coufal, a bigger role is expected for Natnael Abraha in Hoffenheim’s upcoming Bundesliga matches.
His contract has been extended until 2031, Kicker reported.
