Senegal: Mané back, Pathé Mboup called up for the first time!

Patrick Vieira, Senegal’s head coach, unveils his second squad on Thursday morning, with Sadio Mané returning and a first call-up for Pathé Mboup, the Stade Brestois winger, according to football.fr.

The announcement is due on Thursday 5 November in the morning, at Patrick Vieira’s press conference. It is his second squad since being appointed head of the Lions. It comes ahead of his very first home match, on 12 November at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor in Dakar, against Sudan, in the city where the coach was born.

According to football.fr, via Opera News, the Al-Nassr forward, 34 and a two-time African Ballon d’Or winner, returns after missing the last gathering through injury. The Lions captain is back as Senegal head into a double-header in the CAN 2027 qualifiers, before a trip to the Nile Crocodiles on 16 November.

Pathé Mboup, first call-up

The squad also holds a first. According to football.fr, Pathé Mboup, the 23-year-old Stade Brestois winger, is called up for the first time. A former Pau FC player, he has two goals and one assist in nine matches this season.

The call-up comes in a context where the player has never yet worn the Senegal shirt at national team level, according to the available information. The official publication of the squad on Thursday will confirm the Breton winger’s presence in the group.

Two matches against Sudan

Senegal began their qualifiers with a draw in Mozambique (1-1), before winning in Ethiopia (0-1) thanks to a goal from Ibrahim Mbaye. Two matches against Sudan are now on the schedule: 12 November in Dakar, then 16 November on the Nile Crocodiles’ turf.

The first will therefore be played in front of the crowd at Léopold Sédar Senghor, where Patrick Vieira will take charge of his very first home match. The rules are simple: the top two in each group will book their ticket to CAN 2027, due to be held in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Mendy retired, CAS decision awaited

In goal, Édouard Mendy has retired from international football, football.fr reports. The question of his call-up therefore no longer arises for this squad.

On the administrative front, Senegal, stripped of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, await the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a few weeks. A favourable decision would allow the country to be crowned a second time, according to the same source.
