Cameroon: African champions, the Lionesses are in the running for team of the year!

Crowned 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions in Morocco, Cameroon are among the ten nominees for Women’s National Team of the Year at the CAF Awards, CAF has announced. Malawi, the runners-up, are also in the running.

Cameroon, crowned 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions in Morocco, are in the running for the title of Women’s National Team of the Year. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a list of ten nominees that includes the Lionesses, according to GhanaWeb and Media Talk Africa. Malawi, the runners-up, are also on it, as are Ghana, quarter-finalists at WAFCON 2026.

The nomination caps the Cameroonians’ triumph. It pits them against stiff competition: Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa are also named.

A list of ten contenders

Besides Cameroon and Malawi, CAF has shortlisted Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa. Ghana, quarter-finalists at WAFCON 2026, are among the nominees, according to GhanaWeb. Morocco are also on the list.

The individual nominations

The CAF Awards also include individual categories. According to Media Talk Africa, forward Barbra Banda (Zambia) is among the ten nominees for Player of the Year, alongside Thembi Kgatlana (South Africa) and Hanane Aït El Haj (Morocco).

Tabitha Chawinga, the Malawi forward, and her sister Temwa are also nominated in that category. These individual nominations do not affect the collective team of the year title.

The date: 7 December in Lagos

The CAF Awards ceremony is set for 7 December 2026 in Lagos, according to GhanaWeb. That is when the winning team will be announced from among the ten nominees.

Malawi therefore appear on both lists, with their runners-up national team and two individually nominated players.
