At 20, Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane is among the ten nominees for the Best African Young Player award, according to Camerounweb and Lebledparle. He is the only Cameroonian on the list.
Bayer Leverkusen has a representative in the race for the Best African Young Player trophy, and that player is Cameroonian. Christian Kofane, 20, the German club’s centre-forward, is among the ten nominees in the category, reports Lebledparle. No other Indomitable Lion is on the list: he must face nine rivals.
The nomination was made public and picked up by both Camerounweb and Lebledparle. It comes as the striker, who arrived at Leverkusen in July 2025, is enjoying a run of appearances in the Bayer shirt this season.
Three goals in six appearances
The current campaign’s numbers back up the nomination. Across all competitions, Kofane has scored three goals in six matches: two in four Bundesliga games and one in the German Cup, details Lebledparle. According to Opta Analyst, cited by Lattaquant.com, those three goals came in just 176 minutes of playing time.
The previous season, the centre-forward had already found the rhythm of the German top flight, with five goals and four assists in 29 matches.
From Albacete to Leverkusen
Kofane’s path went through Spain. Before joining Bayer in July 2025, he made his name at Albacete in the Spanish second division, with eight goals and one assist in 20 matches, reports Lebledparle.
With the Indomitable Lions, the player has also left his mark: two goals at AFCON 2025, according to Lebledparle. On the African stage, this nomination recognises a profile that has already emerged with the national team.
Ten names, one date
The list of ten contenders for the Best African Young Player title is now known, and Kofane represents Cameroon on it. No winner has yet been named: the verdict will come at the CAF Awards 2026 ceremony, scheduled for 7 December in Lagos.
Until then, the striker will carry on with his club season. He is under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until June 2029.
