With a brace and an assist against Monaco (3-1), Malian striker Lassine Sinayoko becomes the first African to reach 8 goals in 9 Ligue 1 matchdays since former forward George Weah.
Lassine Sinayoko scored twice on Sunday 1 November in Paris FC’s 3-1 win over AS Monaco, according to beIN Sports. He also provided an assist and was involved in all three of his team’s goals.
With 8 goals in 9 matchdays, the Malian international striker becomes the first African to score at least 8 times in the first nine matches of a Ligue 1 season since George Weah in 1991-92. The last equivalent feat by an African player over that stretch dates back almost 35 years, again according to beIN Sports.
Two goals fewer than his illustrious predecessor
The comparison with George Weah is more than a curiosity. In 1991-92, the former AS Monaco striker found the net 10 times in the first nine matchdays, then finished the season with 18 goals, according to beIN Sports. Sinayoko, for his part, has 8 at this stage of the campaign.
The rest of Weah’s career gives the comparison another dimension: he went on to play for PSG and AC Milan and won the 1995 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first African to receive the trophy. Nothing in the facts reported by beIN Sports so far allows the parallel to be extended to the rest of Sinayoko’s season.
Top scorer, most productive spell
Sunday’s brace puts the Malian international top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts. It is also the most productive spell of his career in the French top flight, beIN Sports points out.
His assist for Pablo Pagis, a Paris FC forward, completed the brace.
Paris FC are due to play the next Ligue 1 matchday, whose date beIN Sports does not specify.
