Black Stars: squad for Somalia expected this week!

Without a point after two defeats in 2027 AFCON qualifying, Ghana expects this week the squad from its interim staff to face Somalia on 12 and 16 November.

The Black Stars’ interim technical team will announce its squad this week for the double header against Somalia in 2027 AFCON qualifying, reports Ghana Soccer Net. The two matches are scheduled for 12 and 16 November and will be played on Ghanaian soil, according to Modern Ghana.

The national team sits bottom of Group C without a single point after two defeats in the first two matchdays. The interim staff must prepare for this fixture while the head coach position remains vacant.

Two defeats and a departure

The start of the qualifiers went badly. The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast in Bouaké before falling 4-2 to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, according to Modern Ghana. Two matches, two defeats: the points tally is empty and the place in the Group C table already uncomfortable.

Those results led to the resignation of coach Carlos Queiroz. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports have launched a recruitment process to appoint a new head coach, reports Ghana Soccer Net.

A committee to choose the head coach

To steer the search, a five-member committee has been set up. It is chaired by Fred Pappoe, chairman of the recruitment committee and former GFA vice-president, according to Modern Ghana. Its mission: to find a head coach.

While waiting for the appointment of Queiroz’s successor, it is Kim Lars Björkegren, the interim coach, who will lead the team. He will be assisted by assistant coaches Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while Fatawu Dauda occupies the goalkeeping coach position, specifies Ghana Soccer Net. This quartet must prepare the two November fixtures.

A return to the AFCON in sight

The Black Stars, bottom of Group C without any points, are seeking to return to the AFCON after missing the 2025 edition in Morocco, recalls Ghana Soccer Net. The double confrontation with Somalia, on 12 and 16 November in Ghana, therefore stands as the national team’s next test.

The squad announced this week is not yet known: the interim staff has not communicated any called-up player’s name, and no future head coach has been officially confirmed by Fred Pappoe’s committee.
