Fortuna Sittard: David Stockbrink promoted to the first team and tempted by the Super Eagles

German-Nigerian striker David Stockbrink, 20, has joined Fortuna Sittard’s provisional 25-man squad. Eligible for Nigeria, he has made clear his attachment to the Super Eagles.

The news broke the day after his twentieth birthday. David Stockbrink, a striker of Nigerian origin, has been promoted to Fortuna Sittard’s provisional 25-man squad, according to The Sun Nigeria. A first concrete step for the young man, who arrived at the club in January 2025.

The club are currently sixth in the Dutch league under head coach Danny Buijs. For Stockbrink, this promotion rewards a journey spanning Germany, Poland and the Netherlands.

A striker shaped across three countries

Trained at 1.FC Mönchengladbach, where he captained the U19s, David Stockbrink then joined Warta Poznań U19 before settling at Fortuna Sittard in January 2025. According to The Sun Nigeria, he impressed in a friendly with the first team, with goals and assists to show for it.

His versatility is an asset: he also played at left-back at Mönchengladbach and can fill several attacking roles as well as midfield.

Nigeria, a family bond

His career has already seen physical setbacks. Tipped for Nigeria’s U20 side, he missed last year’s U20 World Cup in Chile because of an injury.

Born to a German father and a Nigerian mother from Umunede, in Delta State, Stockbrink is eligible to represent the Super Eagles. Asked by The Sun Nigeria, he explained his choice simply: “First of all, it’s my choice. My mother loves it, just like my father. Thanks to the strong bond I have with my mother and my many visits, I feel connected to Nigeria; Nigeria appeals to me.”

The statement expresses an intention, with no call-up at this stage: there is nothing to suggest that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) or the Super Eagles staff have been in contact with him.

What comes next at Sittard

David Stockbrink’s priority remains his season with Fortuna Sittard, sixth in the Dutch league under Danny Buijs. His ability to play in several positions, from attack to midfield and the left flank of the defence, could help him settle into the squad.

The club continue their league season with this provisional 25-man squad.
