Marseille: Hervé Renard says OM “looks a lot like Africa”!

National team coach Hervé Renard, the former Morocco and Saudi Arabia boss, believes the environment surrounding Marseille, the club managed by Bruno Genesio, is reminiscent of Africa in its passion and its madness. He was speaking on YouTube, according to Le Dauphiné Libéré.

Marseille and Africa, same fight? That is essentially the parallel drawn by Hervé Renard. On the show “Charlii Parlons Sport”, broadcast on YouTube, he gave his view of the environment at Olympique de Marseille, as reported by Le Dauphiné Libéré. For him, the Marseille context “looks a lot like Africa”.

The comparison rests on one observation: the intensity that surrounds the Phocaean club. Hervé Renard speaks of “such passion, such madness” in Marseille, an environment where, in his view, expectations are considerable and the pressure is constant.

Passion, a fire that smoulders

Hervé Renard does not stop at comparing Marseille to Africa: he extends the metaphor of fire. According to the remarks reported by Le Dauphiné Libéré, passion can lead people to put their fingers near the fire without hearing the warning. An image that sums up, in his eyes, the strength of that environment.

He also mentions the coaches likely to accept the job: “There aren’t many who could turn down Marseille. Yet we know the context, we know we might get burned, that it’s going to be difficult, terrible.” A warning that underlines, he says, the demands and the harshness of the Marseille climate.

Genesio, a choice made in full knowledge

On Bruno Genesio, Hervé Renard believes the Marseille coach since this summer knew what he was taking on. The remark leaves little room for surprise: for him, the coach knew the environment he was stepping into.

The comments come as Marseille continue their Ligue 1 season, with fixtures to come in the league. They were reported on 29 October 2026.

A former national team coach’s view

The parallel comes from a coach who has managed the Morocco and Saudi Arabia national teams. His remarks were made on the show “Charlii Parlons Sport”, where he comments on the Marseille context, with no suggestion of any other stance from the club.
