Aminata Sorgo/Ouoba, high commissioner of Ganzourgou, presented the format of the Sovereign League on 28 October 2026 in Zorgo: 20 regional teams, two groups and a pilot phase from January to June 2027.
Twenty teams, two groups, a six-month pilot phase. On 28 October 2026, in Zorgo, the high commissioner of Ganzourgou province, Aminata Sorgo/Ouoba, brought sports stakeholders together to present the Sovereign League, according to the AIB (Burkina Information Agency).
The project is taking shape: the teams will represent the country’s 17 regions, with an uneven distribution — three places for Kadiogo, two for Guiriko and one for each of the other 15 regions. The next steps are building the staffs and defining the visual identities before the pilot phase kicks off, scheduled from January to June 2027.
Kadiogo and Guiriko better off
The distribution of the twenty places is settled: Kadiogo gets three, Guiriko two, and each of the other fifteen regions just one, according to the AIB. Kadiogo therefore has the largest contingent.
The teams will be split into two groups, one based in Ouagadougou, the other in Bobo-Dioulasso. The Oubri region will be attached to the Ouagadougou group.
Each regional team will consist of 30 players aged 16 and over. Stakeholders must also define each team’s crest, colours, shirt and mascot.
Staffs recruited through calls for applications
Each region will have to set up a technical staff, recruited through calls for applications. A notice has already been published for the Oubri region.
The project is part of the Presidential Initiative for the Promotion of Elite Sport (IP-RELIS), created by the council of ministers on 8 October 2026 and presented on 12 October by Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
A pilot phase from January to June 2027
The pilot phase is scheduled from January to June 2027. It is one of the project’s upcoming stages, along with the recruitment of regional technical staffs.
