RC Strasbourg officially announced on Wednesday that Samir El Mourabet, 21, has extended his contract until June 2031, one season more. The Morocco international midfielder, a product of the club’s academy, was already tied to the club until 2030.
On Wednesday, Racing officially confirmed Samir El Mourabet’s extension until June 2031, Sport.fr reports. The 21-year-old midfielder was already under contract until 2030, so the new deal adds one season to a contract that was already a long-term one.
On paper, the move looks like a formality. In reality, it concerns a player developed at the club, a Morocco international with nine caps who was part of the last World Cup, and whose start to the season in Ligue 1 remains limited.
A deal extended by one season
The announcement came on Wednesday, plain and simple. According to Sport.fr, RC Strasbourg have officially confirmed Samir El Mourabet’s extension until June 2031. The player was not out of contract: his previous commitment tied him to Racing until 2030, and the agreement adds one extra season.
That detail matters. This is not a contractual rescue act ahead of an imminent expiry, but an early extension, while the 21-year-old midfielder still has several years left on his deal. Strasbourg have thus secured one of their academy graduates.
Nine caps and a World Cup
An academy-developed midfielder, Samir El Mourabet has nine caps for Morocco and featured at the last World Cup, a notable CV for a 21-year-old.
His start to the season at club level has been quieter, however. He has started only twice in the first eight matchdays of Ligue 1, according to Sport.fr. His campaign was also disrupted at the end of August by a two-match suspension, handed down after a brutal challenge on Olympique de Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
In that context, the extension is about the long term rather than the immediate future: Racing are committing their midfielder for several seasons, despite limited playing time so far.
Earning playing time
The immediate challenge for the player himself remains the pitch. The stated aim for Samir El Mourabet is to earn more playing time in Ligue 1 with Racing, a prospect the new contract obviously does not guarantee. A deal until 2031 secures his contractual future; it does not automatically open the doors to the starting XI.
The coming matchdays will offer a chance to gauge that shift. The player will need to turn a start to the season marked by two starts into regular playing time.
