Al-Shamal: Riyad Mahrez already drawing the crowds in Qatar

Riyad Mahrez, Al-Shamal’s new signing, played his second match for the Qatari club against Qatar SC in front of a packed stadium. The 35-year-old Algerian winger is pulling in the crowds and has opened his goalscoring account.

The Riyad Mahrez effect is already plain to see in Qatar. In his second match in Al-Shamal colours, this Friday 23 October 2026 against Qatar SC at Doha’s Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium, the Algerian right winger played in front of a crowd firmly behind him.

Arriving on 14 October 2026 for one season with an option of a further year, the 35-year-old Algeria international wasted no time making his mark. On his debut on 17 October against Lusail (0-0), he was handed the captain’s armband when he came on. According to Foot Africa, he opened his goalscoring account in his new colours in that match.

An enthusiastic welcome

The Qatar Stars League hailed the arrival of the Algeria captain. On its social media, the body posted a message: “The magician has arrived Riyad Mahrez officially joins Al Shamal ✍️⚪”. An announcement that made the signing of the new recruit official.

The ticketing figures confirm the enthusiasm. For this match against Qatar SC, the box office was stormed, with nearly 10,000 tickets sold in a matter of days, Foot Africa reports. A sold-out Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium, then, for what is only Mahrez’s second appearance for Al-Shamal.

An Algerian duo up front

On the pitch, Mahrez is partnered in attack by his compatriot Baghdad Bounedjah, the Al-Shamal striker. Before this round of matches, Al-Shamal sat 5th in the table with 9 points from six games, while Qatar SC were 11th with 3 points, according to Foot Africa.

Mahrez arrives with solid experience: three full seasons at Al-Ahli Saudi, 122 appearances, two AFC Champions Leagues and a Saudi Super Cup. He had also posted a formal farewell message on his social media, thanking the fans and the management of the Saudi club.

The Stars League is counting on him

The Qatar Stars League is banking on the Algeria captain’s popular appeal to boost its audiences and attendances. Mahrez’s arrival fits into that strategy.

Al-Shamal and their new signing are next in action on matchday 8 of the Qatari Stars League next weekend.
