DC Virunga: two-goal margin needed in Luanda to reach the group stage!

Beaten 2-1 at home in the first leg, DC Virunga must win by at least two goals on Friday in Luanda against Primeiro de Agosto to secure their ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

DC Virunga face Primeiro de Agosto on Friday 23 October in Luanda, in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round. The Congolese side go into the match a goal down after their 2-1 home defeat on 18 October.

The equation is simple for DC Virunga: they must win by at least two goals to overturn the tie. A draw or a one-goal victory would not be enough to secure a place in the group stage.

A one-goal deficit to overturn

Primeiro de Agosto took a favourable option by winning 2-1 at DC Virunga on 18 October. That home defeat leaves the Congolese side needing a big performance in Luanda, where kick-off is at 15:00 GMT.

The Angolan club, aiming for a notable return to continental group-stage football after several transitional seasons, will have the advantage of playing the second leg at home. DC Virunga, for their part, will need to score at least twice in Luanda.

The Maniema Union precedent

DC Virunga can nonetheless take inspiration from the run of the other Congolese club involved in this preliminary round. Maniema Union have already secured their qualification thanks to a 4-1 away win against Kabuscorp, according to CAF.

For their part, USM Alger are the only club already qualified for the group stage after the withdrawal of Panthers FC. Sixteen places in the 2026-2027 CAF Confederation Cup group stage are being decided this weekend, and DC Virunga hope to claim one of them.

A busy Friday in Africa

The match between Primeiro de Agosto and DC Virunga opens Friday’s Confederation Cup schedule, ahead of other fixtures such as Kaizer Chiefs – Red Arrows and Raja – El Kanemi, according to Sport News Africa.

The group-stage draw will take place on 28 October at CAF headquarters in Cairo.
