Since taking charge, head coach Patrick Vieira has been making repeated tours of stadiums and local clubs. A grassroots approach that former international Pape Fall welcomes.
Patrick Vieira is not content to follow the Lions of Teranga from afar. According to Dakaractu, the national head coach has been visiting stadiums and local clubs non-stop since taking charge. The French-Senegalese coach has notably spoken directly with several officials and sports institutions in the country to observe the realities of the domestic league.
Senegalese observers and coaches compare this grassroots approach to the one Claude Le Roy initiated in Africa in the past, Dakaractu reports, citing L’Observateur.
Pape Fall backs the approach
“A head coach must know what is happening in the league; this proximity is a strong encouragement for local players.” So says Pape Fall, former Senegal international defender and pundit, who welcomed the approach. According to Dakaractu, he believes it is essential for a Lions head coach to immerse himself in the domestic competition to give local players their due.
Pape Fall recommends closer collaboration with the National Technical Directorate (DTN) and regional technical advisers. This collaboration could structure the link between the national team and the local talent pool, without prejudging any future call-up of players based in Senegal, a subject on which no list is known at this stage.
Badara Sarr wants wider scouting
Badara Sarr, secretary general of the Senegalese Coaches’ Union, is calling for these scouting visits to be extended to academies so as to cover the entire national development pool. A way of extending Patrick Vieira’s approach to the structures that prepare future generations.
According to Seneweb, this initiative marks a clear break in approach compared with the previous management of the national team.
Focus on the November qualifiers
Patrick Vieira’s tours follow his first matches in charge, in September 2026, with a squad including several attacking figures such as Nicolas Jackson, according to Seneweb and Dakaractu.
The next Lions of Teranga gathering is scheduled for November 2026 for the continental qualifiers. The list of selected players is not yet known.
