Panathinaikos: Azzedine Ounahi out for three months and ruled out against Niger

Struck down by a right hamstring injury, Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi will be sidelined for almost three months with Panathinaikos and will miss Morocco’s double header against Niger in November.

The injury to Azzedine Ounahi, sustained in Panathinaikos’ most recent match, has been clarified by medical examinations. According to Médias24, the 26-year-old Moroccan midfielder has suffered a severe muscle tear in his right hamstring, a lesion that should keep him off the pitch for almost three months. Carried off in tears on a stretcher, the player had quickly worried those around him.

The full medical details confirm the seriousness of the injury. For Panathinaikos, the absence represents around fifteen matches in all competitions. For the national team, it affects the double header in the CAN 2027 qualifiers.

An absence of three months

According to Médias24, the official period of unavailability is estimated at almost three months, which will keep him off the pitch until at least January 2027. The Casablanca-born player will therefore miss around fifteen matches with the Greek club, in all competitions.

Médias24 states that this is the second serious hamstring muscle injury of his career in Europe. A history that recalls the fragility of this 26-year-old player, a 58-cap international.

Morocco deprived of their midfielder against Niger

Ounahi is already ruled out of the double header in the CAN 2027 qualifiers against Niger, on 13 and 17 November 2026. The first leg was due to be held at the Mohammed V Complex in Casablanca, a symbolic fixture for the player born in the city.

The national team coach, Walid Regragui, will therefore have to do without his midfielder for these two matches. The Atlas Lions thus lose a player accustomed to the national team for the November double header.

Recovery in Athens until January 2027

The treatment protocol is taking place in Athens, where Ounahi will follow his recovery until January 2027. His return to competition therefore cannot be envisaged before that date.

The medical staff of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) are in permanent contact with the doctors in Athens to coordinate his rehabilitation, according to Médias24.
