Levante: Karl Etta Eyong marks injury return with 98th-minute goal

On his return from a tear of the rectus femoris muscle, Cameroonian striker Karl Etta Eyong gave Levante a 3-1 win over Athletic Club by scoring in the 98th minute (90+8), a goal confirmed by VAR.

His return in Levante UD colours could have amounted to a simple cameo: it turned into a winning goal.

Brought on in the second half in place of Iván Romero, the 23-year-old Cameroonian striker sealed his side’s success against Athletic Club (3-1) on matchday 6 of La Liga, in the 98th minute (90+8), with a right-footed shot from close range.

A return foretold and delivered

The move, set up by a pass from Jon Ander Olasagasti, was confirmed after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, according to LaLiga. The goal came in his comeback match, after a tear of the rectus femoris muscle in his right thigh.

The day before, at a press conference, Levante head coach Luis Castro had said that Etta Eyong had resumed collective training and could be in contention for a place in the squad: “He is training with us, we have to see, he could be called up.”

The player answered on the pitch, adding depth in stoppage time against Athletic Club.

This match marks his return. Last season in La Liga, the Cameroonian international scored 6 goals in 30 matches in the granota shirt, according to theScore. Before his injury, he had also provided an assist in the 5-2 win over Real Betis on 29 August 2026, according to FotMob.

A decisive goal for Levante

The success against Athletic Club allows Levante to pull away from the bottom of the Spanish table, Foot Africa reports. His goal, scored in stoppage time, sealed the final 3-1 scoreline.

Born in Douala on 14 October 2003, the striker has a market value estimated at 9 million euros by Transfermarkt.

Real Sociedad, then the Copa del Rey

Levante follow up with a trip to Real Sociedad on Sunday 25 October 2026, before playing the first round of the Copa del Rey against CD Tarancón on 28 October.
