Borussia Dortmund: Guirassy enters Africa’s top 5 in the Champions League!

  • EN, Guinea

With a brace in Baku, Borussia Dortmund’s Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy takes his tally to 23 Champions League goals and moves into the top 5 of the competition’s all-time African scorers.

Two goals, in the 10th and 53rd minutes. Serhou Guirassy scored a brace at the Baku Olympic Stadium, where Borussia Dortmund won 2-1 against Sabah FK on matchday 3 of the league phase, reports DailySports. The Guinean striker thus takes his tally to 23 Champions League goals in just 31 appearances, according to LiveScore.

A figure that moves him into a different bracket: according to Stats Foot, he goes past the 22-goal mark and enters the top 5 of the Champions League’s all-time African scorers. The ranking is still led by Mohamed Salah (50 goals), ahead of Didier Drogba (44), Samuel Eto’o (30) and Sadio Mané (27). Behind them, Guirassy now sits fifth.

Fourth fastest in history

The feat takes on another dimension when you look at the timeline. According to Mister Chip and LiveScore, Guirassy is the fourth fastest player in history to reach 23 Champions League goals, behind Erling Haaland (19 matches), then Ruud van Nistelrooy and Filippo Inzaghi (29 matches each). On that measure, the Borussia Dortmund striker is ahead of names such as Mario Gomez (33 matches), Harry Kane (35), Karim Benzema (37), Robert Lewandowski (40), Kylian Mbappé (41) and Lionel Messi (42).

Consistency adds to speed: according to Opta, the Guinean has scored his 7th Champions League brace since the start of the 2024-2025 season, level with Harry Kane over that period.

Reus’s record in his sights

In a Dortmund shirt alone, Guirassy has scored 21 Champions League goals, according to Squawka. He is now just three short of the club’s all-time record, held by Borussia Dortmund legend Marco Reus with 24.

In Baku, Aden McCarthy, Sabah FK’s South African centre-back, had pulled one back with a header in the first half, before Guirassy turned in a Joey Veerman cross in the 53rd minute, reports Soccer Laduma. BVB, who had lost 1-0 to Bodø/Glimt on matchday 2, now have 6 points after 3 matchdays and are back to winning ways in the Champions League.

Next up in early November

Borussia Dortmund will play matchday 4 of the Champions League on 3 and 4 November 2026, when Guirassy can add to his tally.
