Ghanaian midfielder William Bediako, 18, has left Berekum Chelsea for Atlético Madrid. According to Ghanasoccernet, the transfer takes the form of a loan with an option to buy, and he initially joins the Madrid U19s.

The news was made public by Berekum Chelsea: William Bediako, an 18-year-old midfielder, has signed for Atlético Madrid. The Ghanaian club has confirmed its player’s departure for the Madrid outfit, as reported by AfricaFoot. He was born on 2 February 2008.

According to Ghanasoccernet, the deal takes the form of a loan with an option to buy in favour of the Colchoneros. The player initially joins the club’s under-19 (U19) squad for the 2026-2027 season.

A loan with an option to buy

According to Ghanasoccernet, the loan gives the Madrid directors a full window to assess the Ghanaian talent’s progress.

Berekum Chelsea marked their player’s departure with an official message: “We are delighted to announce that our attacking midfielder, William Bediako, has signed for Atlético Madrid. The whole club wishes William Bediako the best.” The message, signed by the Ghanaian club’s management, is translated here from English and reported by Ghanasoccernet.

Yet the selling club presents him as an attacking midfielder, while according to Ghanasoccernet he usually plays in defensive midfield.

An already rich CV

Before joining Atlético, William Bediako made 30 appearances for Berekum Chelsea’s first team in the Ghanaian Premier League, according to Ghanasoccernet.

According to the same source, the midfielder passed through Spanish lower-division club Trival Valderas Alcorcón before heading to the Metropolitano.

Off to the U19s and the Youth League

William Bediako initially joins Atlético Madrid’s under-19 squad, as indicated by AfricaFoot. His first appearance in those colours is expected in the national youth championship and the UEFA Youth League.

Atlético do indeed play in the UEFA Youth League alongside their Champions League campaign, reports SportsWorldGhana.

At the end of the 2026-2027 season, Atlético Madrid will have to decide whether or not to take up the option to buy.
