The Sudan Football Association has officially confirmed Kwesi Appiah’s extension as head coach of the Nile Crocodiles until 2029, according to Foot Africa. The Ghanaian coach, in charge since September 2023, has been reappointed along with his staff.

The news broke this Monday, 19 October 2026: the Sudan Football Association (SFA) officially confirmed the contract extension of its head coach Kwesi Appiah. The Ghanaian coach’s new deal now runs until 2029, Foot Africa reports. The decision seals the trust placed in the former Ghana Black Stars coach.

Having arrived in September 2023 at the helm of the Nile Crocodiles, Kwesi Appiah has managed to convince despite a particularly delicate context. According to the same source, the SFA praised the team’s consistency and tactical progress, despite the country’s difficult geopolitical situation. The extension locks down the Sudan bench for the combined 2027 AFCON qualifiers and the 2030 World Cup cycle.

An initial deal deemed a success

The initial contract provided for a medium-term collaboration, which the Sudanese leaders deemed a success. According to Foot Africa, the 66-year-old coach now has total autonomy over the sporting project to rebuild the national teams.

The renewal also covers the Ghanaian technical staff working alongside Appiah in his coaching duties. It ensures continuity in the work undertaken for more than three years.

Results despite relocated matches

Under the former Ghana coach, Sudan has positioned itself at the front of its group in the World Cup and AFCON qualifiers, according to Foot Africa. An even more notable performance given that the national team plays all of its matches away from home, due to the security situation.

The country’s geopolitical context indeed forces the Nile Crocodiles to play outside their territory. Despite these constraints, the team has shown a consistency and tactical progress that the federation has praised.

Heading for AFCON 2027 and the 2030 World Cup

With this extension, Kwesi Appiah continues the reconstruction of the national teams with full autonomy. The 2027 AFCON qualifiers and the 2030 World Cup cycle are the two major appointments awaiting him.

Sudan’s next outing is the November 2026 international break, with training camps and qualifying matches on the schedule.
