AFCON 2027: Kenya dismisses postponement rumours, tournament stays in June!

  • EN, Kenya

The president of the Kenyan Football Federation, Hussein Mohammed, has denied any postponement of AFCON 2027, stating that the tournament will indeed be held from 19 June to 17 July 2027, despite persistent rumours.

While persistent rumours had been circulating for several weeks about a possible postponement of the competition to winter 2028, the president of the Kenyan Football Federation (FKF), Hussein Mohammed, was keen to set the record straight. In an exclusive interview with Le360 Sport published on 19 October 2026, the official stated that the tournament would indeed take place on the scheduled dates, from Saturday 19 June to Saturday 17 July 2027.

Kenya is co-host of the event alongside Tanzania and Uganda. The 2027 edition will in fact be the first in history to be organised by three East African nations, under the label “Pamoja”, a Swahili word meaning “together”. A major logistical challenge, against a backdrop of construction delays that have fuelled the postponement rumours.

“We are sticking to the CAF calendar”

Asked about the possibility of a postponement, Hussein Mohammed answered bluntly. “No, as far as I am concerned, we are sticking to the CAF calendar, which provides for an AFCON in June,” he told Le360 Sport. An unambiguous response that puts an end to speculation.

The FKF president also specified that the teams and workers on site were working “day and night” to deliver the infrastructure on time. In Kenya, the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi is among the main venues selected to host the continental competition’s fixtures.

An unprecedented co-hosting under pressure

The three-country organisation is an unprecedented headache, as construction work must be completed in each of the host countries before the deadline. The Confederation of African Football (CAF), led by Patrice Motsepe, had recently put pressure on the local organising committees to speed up modernisation work.

Faced with these demands, the FKF says it is rigorously aligning its operations with the specifications and initial schedule sent by CAF. A way of responding to rumours of a postponement to winter 2028, fuelled by construction delays.

Towards new CAF inspections

Inspection visits by CAF experts are due at the stadium construction sites in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The 2027 edition follows the AFCON held in Morocco.
