Sporting CP’s Mozambican winger Geny Catamo, 25, is reportedly on the radar of five Premier League clubs, including Sunderland, who have made him a priority, according to AfricaFoot.
Sporting CP’s right winger, also used as a wing-back, is reportedly being closely monitored by five Premier League sides ahead of the upcoming transfer windows, according to AfricaFoot. At Sunderland, his name has apparently been placed at the top of their priority list.
The information, carried by that outlet and backed by Hooligan Soccer for the Sunderland case, remains a transfer rumour: no fee is mentioned at this stage. It nonetheless illustrates the interest in the Mozambique international, who was already on the radar during the previous summer window.
Sunderland make their move
According to AfricaFoot, Sunderland have made Catamo their priority target in the transfer market. To assess his athletic and technical profile, club emissaries reportedly travelled to the stadium to watch him in person.
The English club are not alone in the race. Tottenham, Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Brighton are also monitoring the situation, according to the same source. Scouts from the five British sides reportedly watched Catamo during his recent Champions League performances against Galatasaray and RC Lens.
Their research would not be limited to the continental stage: they also reportedly attended the Portuguese league clash with SC Braga, with the aim of assessing his consistency.
A profile on the rise
At 25, Geny Catamo is in his third season of regular top-level football in the Sporting CP shirt, in both the Liga Portugal and the Champions League. His market value is set at €35 million on the reference site Transfermarkt.
In the colours of Mozambique’s Mambas, the winger has scored 16 goals in 44 caps.
English interest is nothing new: AfricaFoot notes that Catamo had already attracted the attention of Premier League sides during the previous summer window.
January in sight
Sporting CP’s upcoming fixtures, in the Portuguese league and the Champions League league phase, should prompt further scouting from the English clubs, according to AfricaFoot.
The opening of the winter window in January is the next opportunity for Sunderland and their rivals to make a concrete offer. Nothing guarantees at this stage that a bid will be made, nor that Sporting will agree to part with their winger mid-season.
