Wolves: Chirewa comes off the bench and scores his first professional goal at Burnley!

Zimbabwean attacking midfielder Tawanda Chirewa gave Wolverhampton victory on the pitch at Burnley with his very first professional goal, ending the Wolves’ run of two straight defeats.

Wolverhampton had finally found a way out of a miserable week. On the pitch at Burnley, at Turf Moor, the Wolves found the breakthrough thanks to a substitute: Tawanda Chirewa, brought on during the second half. The Zimbabwe international attacking midfielder scored the goal that earned his team all three points, according to the Midlands club’s official website.

A first in the career of the Warriors player, who had never scored in a professional match before. The story is a surprising one: Chirewa had made the matchday squad by capitalising on a wave of injuries in the attacking department, Wolves Official reports.

A lofted strike that found the target

The move came from Mateus Mané, the Wolves winger, whose assist set Chirewa up. The Zimbabwean then unleashed a powerful lofted strike; the Burnley goalkeeper got a touch to the ball but could not stop it from ending up in the net, despite the partial deflection.

The man himself described the finish, quoted by the official website: “It’s an incredible feeling. I’m so happy that the team won today and got back on track. In my head, I knew I was going to score. The keeper touched the ball, but it still went in.”

Leaving the bench at just the right time

This goal rewards a winding path. Having arrived at Wolverhampton in 2023, Chirewa went through a spell earlier in the campaign on the bench and in the reserves, according to Wolves Official. He then benefited from a wave of injuries in the attacking department to make the matchday squad.

His introduction coincided with the moment the team were looking for impact up front. “Before the game, it was a big moment because of our injuries. The team needed attacking impact and I felt ready. I hope I’ve given the coach something to think about,” he told Wolves Official. The player also states his ambition to earn a regular starting place in the Wolves set-up.

Three points and a status to defend

This away win ends a run of two consecutive defeats suffered by the Midlands club this week. Thanks to those three points, Wolverhampton are back in the top half of the Premier League table, again according to the club’s official website.

His performance also strengthens his standing within the Zimbabwe national team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, according to the same website. Wolverhampton’s next Premier League fixture: Saturday 24 October 2026.
