AS Saint-Étienne: Mamour Ndiaye, 20, to start against Red Star!

With Gautier Larsonneur ruled out, young Senegalese goalkeeper Mamour Ndiaye will start for AS Saint-Étienne against Red Star, Friday 16 October at 20:00 at Stade Bauer, on matchday 9 of Ligue 2.

AS Saint-Étienne have their plan B. After injuring his right knee in the 2-0 win over Rodez on matchday 8 of Ligue 2, first-choice goalkeeper Gautier Larsonneur has been officially ruled out of the trip to Red Star. That absence thrusts Mamour Ndiaye, 20, into the Saint-Étienne goal, according to Le Progrès.

The Senegalese keeper, signed this summer from Norwegian club Sarpsborg as a backup, will therefore start. Head coach Ian Cathro has promoted him to the Verts’ goal. Before the match, Ben Old, the New Zealand international attacking midfielder, publicly praised his teammate in a press conference: “Mamour Ndiaye? I love him, he’s an incredible guy. He’s a great teammate, someone you want to play with every day. He’s also a very good goalkeeper and I know he’ll give his all this weekend against Red Star to help the team through a difficult moment for Gautier.”

Nine minutes and one save

Against Rodez, Mamour Ndiaye came on in the 88th minute. He played his first nine minutes in a Saint-Étienne shirt in the league, making one save (Infos-foot Galsen). A moment he savoured: “First minutes at Geoffroy-Guichard, a stadium on fire, a win and an incredible crowd. An unforgettable emotion.”

An unusual path

Trained at the Oslo Football Academy in Dakar, the 20-year-old goalkeeper (soon to be 21) was called up for the first time to Senegal’s Lions of Teranga by Patrick Vieira during the last international break in September-October 2026.

His journey is surprising: he was still playing as a striker at the age of 14 before being converted into a goalkeeper (ICI Saint-Étienne Loire).

Rendezvous at Stade Bauer

Red Star host ASSE on Friday 16 October at 20:00 at Stade Bauer, on matchday 9 of Ligue 2. Deprived of their first-choice goalkeeper, the Verts are putting their trust in Mamour Ndiaye for the trip, his first announced start in the Saint-Étienne goal.
