Transfer news: Chelsea reportedly drop Lamine Camara chase, Liverpool lie in wait for January

Within touching distance of a move to Chelsea at the end of the summer window, Monaco’s Senegalese midfielder is reportedly no longer a priority for the Blues. That opens the door for Liverpool, provided they can persuade the Ligue 1 club to sell.

The Lamine Camara saga has taken a fresh twist. According to British outlet CaughtOffside, several sources close to the situation no longer expect Chelsea to make another attempt to sign the Senegal international in January. The Blues are said to be looking at other profiles to strengthen their midfield, with Alex Scott and Adam Wharton among the names mentioned.

Only a few weeks ago, the 22-year-old looked set for London. In the final hours of the summer window, Chelsea and Monaco had agreed a deal worth around €55 million. According to Sky Sports, the player had even agreed a six-year contract with the Blues. But Monaco pulled out, preferring to push through Folarin Balogun’s sale to Everton instead. That deal also collapsed, leaving both players in the Principality. The way talks ended is said to have left a sour taste at Chelsea.

Liverpool make their move

Chelsea’s withdrawal plays into Liverpool’s hands. The Reds were already interested in the summer without following through, but they are reported to have since made initial contact with the player’s representatives. Andoni Iraola’s side are said to be seriously considering a January approach.

On paper, it is a good fit. Liverpool have not signed a direct replacement in midfield since Curtis Jones left for Inter. Camara, who can win the ball back as well as drive play forward, ticks several boxes. The Reds would not be alone either, with Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Brighton also reported to be monitoring the situation.

Monaco hold the cards

The key question remains: Monaco are in no hurry to sell. Signed from Metz in July 2024, Camara is under contract until 2029, and the Premier League interest only strengthens the club’s hand. Monaco are now reportedly asking for around €60 million, a tidy increase on the summer agreement.

Chelsea, then, appear to be out of the race. But Liverpool will need to turn interest into a concrete bid if they want to get a deal moving.
