OM: Habib Beye on the Chopping Block — Departure Imminent

Habib Beye’s position at Olympique de Marseille is becoming increasingly precarious. Appointed in February 2026 as Roberto De Zerbi’s replacement, the Senegalese head coach has failed to turn the tide. Knocked out of the Coupe de France by Toulouse on penalties, hammered 0-3 at Nantes in Ligue 1, and a catastrophic record of five defeats in ten matches — the worst start by an OM coach since Jean Fernandez in 2005. With no Champions League qualification secured and no cup final to show for it, Beye’s 18-month contract is already under serious threat ahead of the summer.

Criticism is raining down on the Marseille dugout. After the Nantes disaster, Beye himself admitted his team had been completely absent, stating: « There was no performance from us whatsoever. We were empty. » Internal dressing room tensions compound the sporting failures, with players such as Mason Greenwood singled out for their lack of commitment. Christophe Dugarry pulled no punches: « Given the season we’ve had, I couldn’t care less about their feelings » — a direct response to the coach’s complaints about media treatment. The imminent arrival of Grégory Lorenzi to restructure the sporting project is only piling on the pressure further.

Signed in haste following De Zerbi’s dismissal at Rennes, Beye had initially sparked hope as a former OM captain (2003–2007). A brief upturn had even pushed the club to third place in March, but results quickly collapsed. The debate is raging: should he resign? L’Équipe analysts describe him as « currently failing, » while Foot01 has already run the headline « It’s already over. » With a fragile status and the Champions League objective now out of reach, his future at the Commanderie looks deeply compromised.

Barring a major surprise, Habib Beye is unlikely to remain in the OM dugout next season. A toxic atmosphere, a string of failures and looming structural changes appear to have sealed his fate. Marseille supporters, already bitterly disappointed by cup heartbreak and the Champions League slip, are demanding a shock to the system. Who will step in to succeed the Senegalese coach and rebuild OM? The summer on the Canebière promises to be explosive.
