Arsenal: Arteta targets Ousmane Diomandé — but Sporting CP’s €80M price tag is a major obstacle

Arsenal have identified the Sporting CP and Ivory Coast centre-back as a serious summer target. Mikel Arteta wants to strengthen his defensive line, and Ousmane Diomandé fits the blueprint perfectly. The stumbling block? An €80 million release clause that nobody wants to trigger in full.

Some transfer targets aren’t born from impulsive scouting — they are the result of a carefully drawn plan. Arsenal’s summer blueprint reportedly has a name: Ousmane Diomandé, 22-year-old Ivorian centre-back at Sporting CP, one of the most coveted defenders in European football. According to TeamTalk and AfricaFoot, the Gunners have already made preliminary contact with the Lisbon club to assess the feasibility of a deal. The north London side even sent their chief scout to Portugal to watch him up close. Diomandé’s profile checks every box Arteta demands: physically dominant, outstanding in the build-up phase with a 92% pass completion rate, and powerful in duels, winning 67% of his aerial and ground contests. His performances alongside Sporting’s backline have made him a natural fit next to William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.

The obstacle, however, is financial. Sporting CP extended Diomandé’s contract to June 2030 in January 2026, keeping his release clause firmly at €80 million — a figure both Arsenal and Chelsea consider too steep to trigger in full. However, CaughtOffside reports that the two London clubs believe a negotiated deal — structured around an initial fee of €50–60 million with add-ons — could be achievable. Sporting’s stance remains firm, buoyed by the belief that rival clubs will emerge to push the price up. Arsenal are not alone: Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are all monitoring the situation. At 22, with his stock still rising and the Ivory Coast set to appear at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Diomandé enters this summer’s transfer window in a position of maximum leverage. Arteta has the vision — the question is whether Arsenal will pull the trigger before their rivals do
