PSG: Luis Enrique puts Ibrahim Mbaye in his place

At just 18, Ibrahim Mbaye is discovering a harsh truth about elite football: at Paris Saint-Germain, nothing is ever guaranteed.

Left out of the squad for last Sunday’s clash against Olympique Lyonnais (1-2 defeat), the young Senegalese winger — with 25 appearances and one goal in all competitions this season — is facing the consequences of relentless competition. Initially promoted by Luis Enrique two seasons ago, Mbaye impressed before the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, playing 19 out of 25 possible matches. However, since returning, he has managed only 190 minutes in 2026 and hasn’t featured since March 21 against Nice. His omission against Lyon, confirmed as a purely sporting decision by Fabrizio Romano, raises serious questions about his future at the club.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the Ligue 1 fixture against FC Nantes, Luis Enrique opted for honesty over diplomacy. “Every minute you play at PSG must be special. You have to be ready. He has been ready, but I expect much more from all players. It’s simply competition,” the Spanish coach stated. The message goes beyond Mbaye: at PSG, selection is based purely on immediate performance in training, regardless of age or status within an ultra-competitive squad.

Mbaye’s rapid rise has suddenly stalled. A starter against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League earlier this season, he was expected to gain more playing time after the AFCON, especially after an impressive final against Morocco. Yet three months later, he has fallen off the radar — an unused substitute against Toulouse and Liverpool, and now dropped entirely. Under contract until 2028 with an annual salary of €910,000, his market value is estimated at around €30 million.

With the summer transfer window approaching, Premier League clubs including Aston Villa, West Ham United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United, and potentially Millwall FC are closely monitoring the young talent. Luis Enrique remains clear: “You have to make the most of every minute” to earn your place back. For Mbaye, the path forward requires intense daily work — but a departure now seems increasingly likely if competition continues to prevail.
