PSG: Salah, an (almost) impossible mission against the Saudi jackpot

Mohamed Salah is set to leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season, confirming a departure that has Europe’s top clubs— including Paris Saint-Germain—on high alert. The Egyptian star, a Reds legend with 255 goals and 122 assists in nine years, is still delivering at an elite level: 16 goals and 9 assists this season despite being 33. In Paris, Luis Campos is monitoring the situation from a distance, with no concrete move yet, prioritizing team balance around Kylian Mbappé and Warren Zaïre-Emery rather than expensive superstars.

FC Barcelona and PSG are both tracking the situation without real conviction, according to Ekrem Konur. Salah’s salary—over €20 million net per year (around £400,000 per week)—is a major obstacle for Paris, which remains committed to its post-QSI financial strategy. Last summer, a move had been considered as his contract was nearing its end, but his extension until 2027 changed everything: PSG is now focusing on high-potential talents like Bradley Barcola.

Saudi Arabia currently leads the race with massive offers: Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr and Al-Qadsiah are preparing XXL contracts close to €100 million over three years—figures PSG cannot match without abandoning its financial principles. Talks are also ongoing with Al-Hilal through Salah’s agent, who has already referenced these lucrative opportunities. In Paris, the marketing appeal (90 million Instagram followers) is tempting, but sporting logic remains the priority.

Meanwhile, Liverpool is planning for life after Salah, targeting players such as Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Michael Olise, and Rodrygo—moves that could complicate PSG’s plans. Paris will only act if a genuine opportunity emerges in the market, where stars like Salah represent a calculated temptation rather than a top priority. For now, PSG remains cautious, while the Egyptian embodies the clash between ambition and financial realism.
