After five seasons in Portugal, young Malian midfielder Mohamed Lamine Seyba Sacko, nicknamed « Momo, » has left Western Europe to take on a new challenge in Azerbaijan. A free agent after playing notably for São Martinho, Felgueiras, and Vilaverdense, he signed with Neftçi PFK, the country’s flagship club, where his older brother Falaye Sacko already plays. To gain playing time, Mohamed has been loaned to Sabail FK in the Azerbaijani second division until January 2026.
Mohamed Sacko’s journey in Portugal was formative but fraught with difficulties. He mentioned financial challenges, including salary delays at Vilaverdense, but highlighted the valuable technical and physical experience gained in the league. He established himself at each stage, earning several individual awards in the third division before seizing the opportunity to join Neftçi PFK, one of the most decorated clubs in Azerbaijan and a regular participant in European competitions.
His older brother, Falaye Sacko, a Malian international and right-back, signed a two-year contract with Neftçi in August 2025 after a significant spell at Montpellier HSC in France. This transfer represents a rare and precious opportunity for both brothers to play together, which the younger eagerly anticipates. Mohamed emphasizes the importance of Falaye’s support and advice, who serves as a true mentor in this new adventure.
Mohamed Sacko’s objective is now clear: to prove himself worthy of the challenge and earn an important place in Neftçi PFK’s first team. He aims to compete in the Azerbaijan Premier League, contribute to the club’s national success, and play in European competitions, thus continuing his ascent in professional football. This stage in Azerbaijan could mark a major turning point in the career of this promising Malian midfielder.
