The second day of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, held this Sunday in Casablanca and Mohammedia, delivered an intense spectacle with remarkable performances from several African teams. Senegal stood out by confidently beating the Democratic Republic of Congo 4-0, thanks to braces from Mama Diop and Nguenar Ndiaye, securing a swift victory with three goals scored in just 22 minutes. Senegal’s defensive solidity, notably goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye, ensured a clean sheet that places the Lionesses at the top of Group A, well positioned to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Nigeria, the defending champion and a powerhouse of the competition, confirmed their strength by dominating Tunisia with a clear 3-0 scoreline. The Super Falcons made the difference early on with goals from Oshoala, Babajide, and Ihezuo, solidifying their lead in Group B. Their experience and efficiency remain decisive assets in this Women’s AFCON, as shown by their wide winning margin.

Algeria, for its part, launched its campaign well by winning 1-0 against Botswana thanks to an early goal by Ghoutia Karchouni, demonstrating the rise of this often underestimated team. This success was crucial to ensure a strong start in Group B, where every point is valuable for advancing to the final stages. Algeria then held Nigeria to a draw, showing notable resilience and progress in the competition.

These first results signal a tightly contested competition for the quarterfinals, with Senegal and Nigeria leading their respective groups and Algeria ready to play the spoiler role. The 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations promises high-level African women’s football marked by determination, individual and collective talent, and a growing desire of these nations to establish themselves on the global football stage.
