CHAN 2024: Senegal clinches bronze against Sudan after thrilling penalty shootout victory

In an intense match for the third place of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) held at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Senegal secured the bronze medal by defeating Sudan 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time. This tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, saw the Lions of Teranga demonstrate strong resilience after an early goal from Mohamed Tia Asad for Sudan in the 6th minute.

The match quickly tilted in favor of Sudan, who imposed pressure from the start. Supported by disciplined defense and decisive goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja, Sudan maintained their lead until halftime. However, Senegal regained control in the second half and equalized in the 58th minute with a precise header from Seyni Ndiaye, following good wing play by Ousseynou Seck.

Despite Senegal’s dominance and several chances in the second half, the score remained tied, sending the game straight to penalties without extra time. Sudan missed their first two penalty attempts, while the Senegalese were flawless, with Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé, and Libasse Guèye converting their shots to secure a 4-2 shootout victory.

This bronze medal caps a CHAN 2024 marked by Senegalese resilience after their semi-final elimination by Morocco. Senegalese coach Souleymane Diallo praised the maturity and character of his players. Sudan, coached by Kwesi Appiah, earned continental admiration for a remarkable campaign despite challenging domestic preparations due to conflicts in their national league. The focus now shifts to the final between Morocco and Madagascar in Nairobi, which will decide the championship title.
